On Country

Marree

Marree is a small town located in the north of South Australia. Bangarra Dance Theatre has visited this small town since 2011, building and sustaining relationships with the local people and traditional custodians of Lake Eyre, the Arabunna people.

Bangarra's production Terrain is set nearby this township, in South Australia's picturesque Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. In 2012, Frances Rings, was commissioned to create Terrain, her first full-length work. In 2011, prior to commencing the choreographic process, Frances travelled to Marree with Jacob Nash (Set Design) and David Page (Music), to connect with the Country, meet Elders and discuss her ideas for Terrain. Here she met Cultural Consultant, Arabunna man Uncle Reginald Dodd. At this time, the lake was full of water from cyclone Yasi. Frances returned in 2012 (when the lake was dry) with Karen Norris (Lighting Design) to continue consultation with Uncle Reg. The full company travelled to Marree in 2013, connecting to Country, meeting local people and Uncle Reg and also teaching workshops. In 2016, this stunning work, Terrain, returned to Country in a community performance at Marree.
