About Bangarra Dance Theatre

Bangarra is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation and one of Australia’s leading performing arts companies, widely acclaimed nationally and around the world for our powerful dancing, distinctive theatrical voice and utterly unique soundscapes, music and design.

Currently led by Artistic Director Stephen Page, Bangarra was birthed in 1989 from the energy of NAISDA (National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association) founder Carole Y Johnson, along with NAISDA graduates, and Robin Bryant and Cheryl Stone. That spark continues to animate the company today.

Inextricably linked to Country and community, Bangarra’s contemporary storytelling practice has evolved from an ancient heartbeat. Bangarra has become part of the complex weave of our country’s First Nations’ songlines as this ancient culture continues to be passed down, growing and evolving in accord with the times.

Everything Bangarra does comes from the collection of knowledge that our First Nations people, artists and creatives carry.
