Homelands - Nurturing the Bangarra Clan through Return to Country

  • North East Arnhem Land, Torres Strait Islands
  • Stories, Songs & Language, Highlights, Performance, Concept

A Homeland is a small, family-based settlement or outstation on traditional Yolŋu clan land.

Bangarra endeavours to regularly spend time with Communities on their Homelands; the critical importance of 'on Country’ experiences extends across all Bangarra programs.

Every year, Bangarra endeavours to return to Country; these cultural exchanges are at the heart of Bangarra's mission - the critical importance of 'on Country’ experiences extends across all Bangarra programs.

Hear Bangarra artists share their perspectives as you immerse yourself in beautiful scenes captured from Return to Country tours across the years.

This video explores the following:

  • Rekindling - The company's youth and outreach program, Rekindling can only be conducted ‘on Country’ as the team works alongside community Elders in supporting and nurturing the next generation of cultural leaders.
  • Russell Page Graduate Program - One of the most important aspects of the Russell Page Graduate Program is where young dancers travel to the Country and Community that have inspired the works they will perform on stage.
  • Bangarra Dance Artists and Creatives - This is the dancers' opportunity to be 'filled up', to rejuvenate and to be equipped to take on the responsibility of telling the stories that they have been entrusted with.
  • Workshops - these opportunities also provide the Bangarra clan with the chance to give back, by providing workshops and bringing productions back to the land and people who inspired them.
