A toile is a mock-up of a garment, usually made in calico or an inexpensive fabric. The toile helps the designer and costume maker work out design or construction challenges, and ensures a perfect fit before the real fabric is cut. Deborah's costume for 'Crown' was made in a silver lurex velvet, of which there was a limited supply.
