Listening Back: Our Early Voices

Our Early Voices | Carole Y Johnson

In conversation with Bangarra Alum Yolande Brown, we honour Carole Yvonne Johnson, the young African American dancer, artist, activist and advocate whose vision helped ignite the movement that would become NAISDA and, ultimately, Bangarra. Arriving in Australia in the early 1970s amid a powerful era of rights movements and First Nations self-determination, Carole recognised that First Nations voices were missing from the dance landscape and set about creating change- gathering support, nurturing talent, building alliances and creating pathways. Bangarra would not be where it is today without her vision, determination and extraordinary contribution.
