Ochres is a portrayal of this earthy substance, its myriad of purposes and its spiritual significance to Aboriginal people.

The portrayal of each colour is by no means a literal interpretation, but the awareness of its spiritual significance has challenged our contemporary expressions.

Stephen Page - 2015

The promotional images created to for each Bangarra season are highly regarded. A great deal of care is put into their look and feel. Dance Artists Leonard Mickelo and Tara Gower apply the ochre to their skin. This is referred to as ‘painting up’. Artistic Director Stephen Page then directs them as they move before the camera of photographer Edward Mulvihill. This photo shoot was conducted in 2015 for the 21st anniversary season of Ochres at Sydney’s Carriageworks.
